As the founder of Cascade Agroecology, Matt is committed to supporting a sustainable future for agriculture by providing rigorous, thoughtful, and
inclusive agroecology research.
Cascade Agroecology facilitates research centered on assisting farmers and the ag industry in solving complex and context-specific management challenges with biologically-based solutions.
With 10+ years working with farmers across many cropping systems and regions, his expertise ranges from designing large-scale “transition-to-regenerative” and “organic vs. conventional” research studies, to experimental design and data analysis of climate smart cropping systems, and international research/technical assistance to support biological pest control efforts for subsistence farmers. These projects have included grower recruitment, research design, on-farm field work, data collection, project management, and data analysis. Matt’s work with various funders, farms of all sizes, and numerous collaborators have allowed him to develop a network of relationships with farmers and brands interested in transitioning to biologically-based management practices. Before entering the consulting world, Matt worked as a research professor at Washington State University. He has consulted with groups such as the World Wildlife Fund, USAID, Washington Treefruit Research Commission, The Colville Confederated Tribes, Stemilt Growers, and others.
Matt holds a BS in Biology, an MS in Ecology and Environmental Science, and a PhD in Entomology. He combines his academic background in applied insect ecology with his on-farm research experience and relationships with farmers, to address the nuance growers face every day in their aspirations and movement towards sustainability. Matt uses an inclusive, farmer-focused scientific approach to develop relevant, practical management solutions.
